First M.O.C.Q. Annual Golf Day.
Sunday April 2, 2000

The first Mini Owners Club annual golf day was held on Sunday April 2nd at the Wantima Country Club Brendale. The event was a 2 ball ambrose and the day turned up a few surprises.

First on the tee at 7.00am was Toowoomba member, Phil Whittington who travelled down for the day and his mate Jerrard Radke. Phil’s first shot showed us that they would be taking this game seriously. They were joined by Anton and Terry Nolan who also started with a bang.

Next up was yours truly The President, who hadn’t hit a ball for nearly 11 months due to a back injury, but managed to not disgrace ones self with a better than average drive. (I should take a forced rest more often).

My playing partner was the Club Captain Tony Formosa, playing about his sixth ever game. As the day progressed he showed that he was better at putting than driving. (especially when it came to reverse driving).

The other two in our group was my counterpart from Channel Seven and regular golf partner, Warren Evans, and club member Andrew Wright, playing his first game ever.

On the second tee it was time for the first surprise. I told Tony that I was going to hit the cover off this one as I teed up the ball. With a big grin he said, “oh yeah!”. But unbeknown to Tony I had changed my ball for an exploding one. I gave it a good wack, and with a loud bang it covered us all in a white cloud of powder. The look on his face was priceless!!

The next surprise came at the presentation. When the scores were tallied the two first timers were in the trophy list with Tony and The Pres taking out second place with a nett 72 and Andrew and Warren taking third with a nett 76. The winners with a nett 68 were our Toowoomba connection, Phil and his mate Jerrard. The winners of the “Bradman Award”, the trophy for the highest score, went to Anton and Terry with 90.

Thanks to the organisers of the day, Ray and Judy Retchless who not only arranged the venue, but supplied the BBQ lunch as well. Well done Ray and Judy. Thanks to David McGregor for supplying the plaques for the trophies. Thanks also to the other players including Bob and Alec Davis and Mark Fennell. A good day was had by all.

Start practising for the 2001 golf day Tony & Andrew!
