The Mini 2000 event started with a day run to Mooloolaba on the Saturday with over twenty Minis leaving from the southside and sixteen from McDonalds at Aspley on the northside. With John Heselwood and I communicating along the highway to see whether my group could link with his group from the south as they came off the Gateway, I could not believe when I saw the top of the Minis approaching and coming over the bridge and meeting us where the two motorways merge. Around 50 Minis were now merging into one convoy without stopping which was a great feat on the busy Bruce Highway. Yes, we did plan to meet like this, but had no idea that it would work. What a great sight to see that many Minis meet together, our interstate visitors must have thought how do the Queenslanders do it! Just luck!! The lunch at Friday’s restaurant at The Wharf was excellent with a nice view overlooking the river and marina. Hope you all enjoyed it. The dinner on Saturday night was also well attended. 63 members and 8 interstate visitors enjoyed the night, which was a good effort considering we were all exhausted from the run and then setting up for the next day at Lakeside. Many thanks to Tracey York for organising the dinner. Our main event on Sunday was well represented considering the rain didn’t stop all night. With the blue sky trying to open all day and the occasional shower, we managed to continue the events and family activities without any disappointments. Unfortunately we only registered just over 200 Minis for the day, which was below our expectations of over 400. Under the circumstances, considering it had rained most of the day Saturday and all night and was still raining in the morning I think we did extremely well. Congratulations to all the members and visitors who braved the early drive to the Lakeside Raceway and prayed for the weather to clear. You are truly a Mini Enthusiast at heart. I must thank Bob Holden and partner Colleen, all the “Mini Racing Legends” and all our visitors from Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Tamworth, Casino, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Maryborough and other parts of the state. Thank you again for attending, maybe next time we can bring the beautiful one day perfect the next weather we are famous for. I would also like to thank all the committee and members who worked so hard to bring this weekend together, it was truly a great effort for the members who worked so hard with the BBQ’s, Club Merchandise, Set-up, Sprints and Motorkhana and the Show-n-Shine. Look forward to seeing you at the BBQ Breakfast & Day Run to Toowoomba on Sunday 16th July. Must go, have to start the planning for the Mini 2001. Your Club Captain Tony. |
