The first year anniversary and Monthly Meeting of the Mini Owners Club was held at the Brisbane BMW showrooms. The night started with a BBQ with the compliments of BMW in the car park surrounded with Minis and BMW cars. Our host and speaker, Brisbane BMW Managing Director Martin Roller, gave the members a brief outline of what is happening regarding the new Mini and release plans for next year. It was a great night with 104 members and 4 guests attending, making it the best night we have had at a monthly meeting. What a fantastic venue to celebrate our first birthday of the club. Many thanks again to Brisbane BMW and staff for making it such a memorable evening. With so many new members signing up, fast approaching 350, we may have to order a bigger birthday cake for the second birthday. Thanks also to Graham & Andrew Williams and Trevor & Chris Moy for their generous donations for the club’s raffle prizes. Moogerah Dam Weekend. We had about 30 enthusiastic members camp overnight at Moogerah Dam for our ski weekend. More members arrived on Sunday morning to join in the fun. We all had a ball either trying out our skills on the skis or having fun on the rubber rings tied behind Dave Perkins impressive speed boat. After a very wobbly start and with a lot of patience from Dave I managed to get up and have a go myself after 27 years since my last ski. Andrew Wright was the star of the weekend, not only was he skiing like a professional after only one lesson, but he also volunteered to drive back to Moorooka with Allison to pick up a part for the boat after it hit a submerged log. We all waited up for them on Saturday night and amused ourselves around the campfire with a few good yarns, some marshmallows and of course plenty of good grog to keep everyone happy. I think Bob Davis started way before any of us and was very happy all day. He sure knows how to have a good time. Sunday saw us all up bright and early, you don’t have much choice at these places when all the ski boats start their engines at 6.00am! Gary Byth bought along his boat as well and had his son Peter skiing on one ski by the end of the weekend. Glen and Jane had two canoes there for those of us who like a slower pace. I bet Ray Retchless wishes he had stuck to the canoes after coming off one of the rubber tubes face first! Spencer Gundy and family arrived on Sunday full of enthusiasm about his first time on skis, and did really well. He had a lot of fun on the float as well and got into some pushing and shoving with Elizabeth on the float beside him. Most of the ladies decided skiing wasn’t for them, but were kept entertained by watching the guys try to squeeze their bodies into the extremely tight wetsuit ski pants, what a sight!!! Many thanks to Dave Perkins and Allison Yates who were our perfect hosts for the weekend. They made sure everyone had a chance to try out the activities and we all had a great lot of fun.
